NEW YORK’S WINTER BEACH CULTURE, AND WHY IT’S ALL WRONG

By: Mike Townsend

“When it snows, book a flight straight to Puerto Rico.” That’s the advice I received from Joel Tudor and Danny Fuller over a New Year’s Eve in California, about a month before I moved to New York. Unfortunately, I didn’t take their advice soon enough. I lived right on the beach giving not two shits about beach lifestyle. Then, in the city, the wind would change and I’d smell the sea and completely freak out.

Everything changed when I finally remembered about Puerto Rico and booked that first trip. No sooner was I off the plane than my entire perspective about living on the East Coast had shifted. You actually can jump on a three hour plane and just miss a polar vortex bashing. Great news for anyone who loves a beach that mirrors Hawaii, and if you surf then your shit-eating grin will be even bigger. If Miami or Tulum is your program, I’m not saying come to Puerto Rico instead–the East Coast Hawaii will be just fine without you.
