Menswear brand Rivay does it again with their newest collection. Inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’s famed movie, Apocalypse Now, Rivay’s Jon Ruti explains how and why he drew so many elements and ideas from the film. From the colorways in each piece to the prints and patterns, each of the pieces from the SS17 collection is both unique and reminiscent of the film, while also adding a refreshing offering of menswear that has yet to be seen in recent seasons.

What was the inspiration behind this collection?
Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now made a big impression on me growing up. The cinematography, subject matter, soundtrack and use of color are so powerful. A lot of these elements translated well into the Rivay aesthetic for spring/summer 2017. Our tiger stripe camouflage field jacket, olive drawstring shorts, deep plum sweatshirt and linen cargo shirt take their inspiration from the military themes of the film. Our short sleeve tropical printed shirts are muted and masculine, paying tribute to an important actor in the film – the Philippine jungle.
Any exciting business updates or initiatives to tell us about?
Keep an eye out for some limited edition t-shirts featuring new artists and designs that compliment the lifestyle of Rivay. We’ve also introduced shorts for the first time this spring and we’ll continue to introduce more bottoms into our Fall 17 collection. Our mobile unit/ pop-up shop will be out again this spring summer around NYC, and possibly other locations within the next year.
What is similar about this collection compared to the others and what was your goal when envisioning this line?
Continue to expect the highest quality fabrics and meticulous construction with this collection. Like our past styles, these pieces are equally at home in the city or places more out of bounds. Our goal was to create timeless and wearable pieces that any guy can easily integrate into his existing wardrobe. It’s also always important that whatever we create is able to serve double duty – to go from office to adventure and back again without skipping a beat.
