The Gentlemen who brought us Montauk’s Surf Lodge have managed to bring us yet another reason to suffer through the long drive to the furthest point in Long Island… Ruschmeyer’s.
Just down the road from The Surf Lodge you will find this magical lakeside escape, it will bring you back to your childhood with cabin style rooms and suites outfitted with balsa-wood airplanes, bubbles and hammocks. And there is plenty to do outside as well… pingpong, kite boarding, paddle boarding, yoga and of course, surfing.
With live performances scheduled for most of the summer, you can count on a fantastic vibe all season long. The guys from one of my favorite restaurants in New York City (The Fat Radish) prepare the food and drinks with drinks and dancing afterwards next door at the Electric Eel create a recipe for the perfect getaway weekend.
We were able to catch up with the guys for a little Q&A to talk about the hotel, where it all started and what summer means to them.
Q&A | The Property
What was it about this property that drew you in?
ROB – For starters it is a Montauk institution with a long respected history. We also loved the semi sprawling property, water view. The 1950s hotel rooms and restaurant had a “Dirty Dancing” kind of feel so there was a lot to riff off of
BEN – The grounds, the big lawn and the cool ’50’s architecture of the restaurant
Both of your properties are in Montauk, what made you decide to do another place here as apposed to a different location all together?
ROB – We love being out here and like the market so from a management perspective it makes sense
BEN – We both love Montauk and figured if we’re doing one, we may as well do two
The Fat Radish is fantastic and one of my favorite places in the city, how though did you settle on bringing them out east for this project?
ROB – My partner Ben Pundole has a great relationship with both Ben Towill and Phil Winser so it all just kinda worked
BEN – I love the Fat Radish too..They were the only people I wanted involved, what they do with food is so fresh and exciting and Ben and Phil both have an incredible spirit.
Your favorite element on the property?
ROB – I like the overall feel the “Nautical Explorers Club” theme and how it’s present in each room
BEN – The Sand bar – a swimming pool turned beer garden with Ping Pong and Bocce ball.
If you aren’t at one of your hotels in Montauk this summer, where can you be found?
ROB – At the beach
BEN – 5 Leaves or Frannys in Brooklyn or The Fat Radish LES
Q&A | Fashion & Beyond
When you head East what can’t you live without?
ROB – Swim trunks or depending on the time of year, a wetsuit
BEN – Sunglasses
What do you take to the beach?
ROB – A surfboard and a snack
BEN – Music, beach rug, surf board
Describe your perfect weekend?
ROB – As cliche as this may sound, spending the day on the beach and in the water with friends and a bag full of sandwiches.
BEN – Beach, girlfriend Chelsea, sunshine, good food, cold beer, Ping Pong, Music, good friends..
Long board, short board, handplane or asleep on the beach?
ROB – All of the above…depends on the day
BEN – Longboard/beach sleep.
What does summer mean to you?
ROB – Summer in Montauk is filled with lots of work and long days on the beach with friends and family… it’s a great season.
BEN – Everything!!
