For the next installment of the Style-List we caught up with our talented friend Garrett Neff. Model, Restauranteur and Creative Director, who you might recognize most from the countless magazines, brand campaigns or runway shows that he’s graced over the last decade. He is after-all considered one of only a handful of male supermodels working today. But that aside, Garrett has branched out over the last few years, tackling new projects and passions. With the most recent being his mens’s lifestyle brand, Katama, which launched last year. So leading up to the drop of his latest capsule collection for spring 2018, we sat down with Garrett to walk through the collection (we’re digging this Katama bomber) and to get a little rundown of the people, places and things that are inspiring him right now.
STYLE-LIST: GARRETT NEFF
Where did it all start?
What is your favorite city and neighborhood?
I love New York, Edgartown, Provincetown, Newport, Rhode Island.
My favorite neighborhood in New York is Nomad, where I live. It’s just a really exciting time in that part of town at the moment with all of the change. The west Village is always great.
What is your favorite hotel?
The Ritz Carlton Reserve in Phulay Bay Thailand was amazing.
Your favorite restaurant and dish?
Any Pho at Stock Philly, and their Green Papaya salad. Full disclosure: I’m one of the owners. But also Big Eye Tuna Tarts at Bond Street in New York, which I don’t own but frequent as if I did.
I really like The Lately Bar and Kind Regards in New York. They feel like home. Not pretentious and I always see friends there.
Favorite vacation location?
Miami is so easy and has every convenience, and is a great getaway from New York winters. In the summer, I love hitting up the New England beach towns and islands– all along Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Rhode Island. We’ll be spending a lot of time up that way in the coming months with our KATAMA Lawn Sports Tour.
Favorite duffel or suitcase?
Lately, I borrow my girlfriend’s Louis Vuitton black and gray check duffel. It’s such a great size for a three day trip. For longer trips I use a trusty, hard-shell Rimowa.
Katama is my heart and my expression but I love so many brands. Ralph Lauren has been a lifelong favorite. Todd Snyder’s pieces are understated, comfortable and always a great fit.
Favorite jean brand?
RRL, Todd Snyder, APC
Essential wardrobe item?
I love my Cartier Santos bracelet. I wear it everyday. And our Katama x Lizzie Fortunato arrowhead necklace has been the most recent item I just can’t take off.
Favorite time of year?
Your style Icon/s?
Stylist and Fashion Editor George Cortina is the best dressed guy I know. He can, and does, make a $5 white Hanes undershirt look like a million bucks.
Personal style tip for others?
Any items in your wardrobe can work with the right combination. It takes time to learn your wardrobe, and get the right key pieces. But it’s easy once you find your brands and just build around that.
I’m very lucky that I’m sample size and can wear most clothes off the rack. For some of my more tailored pieces, brands often generously provide the work in-house.
I get my hair cut on set 75% of the time. Other times my friends Rudy Azar or Benjamin Thigpen are generous enough to cut my hair. I’ll also go to Cowlicks in New York, it’s so peaceful and super reasonably priced.
Coffee or tea?
Favorite shoe maker?
I’ve been wearing Greats a lot. Katama collaborated on their runner/ boat shoe hybrid and I’ve been wearing the prototypes a lot. Todd Snyder too. They always know how to collaborate with brands in a great way.
I’m waiting for the Jeep Wagoneer to go all electric. That would be it.
Favorite watch / watch brand?
I haven’t been wearing my watch for the last 9 months, just because it’s been nice not to. But I do think it’s special to have one nice watch. Mine is an IWC Portuguese I’ve had since 2008. It will never go out of style.
Essential gadget you can’t live without?
I need my Canon camera. 1dx. Also, my iPhone and MacBook Pro. I couldn’t live without these tools.
Favorite song or album?
I’ve been running to this remix: Bad Decisions – Purple Disco Machine Remix – Two Door Cinema Club (this is all one song) I heard it playing at a hotel in Miami earlier this month.
Oceana for sure!! I’m designing capsule collections for Oceana X Katama to raise funds and awareness for their efforts as the world’s leading advocacy organization for protecting the Oceans on a global scale. It’s something I’m very proud of.
I couldn’t pick a favorite. But I really love Jake Longstreth’s work, Uri Aran, Pius Fox, Shawn Kuruneru.
