Day one of the Billabong Pipe Masters, in memory of Andy Irons, brought a battle of wills to the famed Hawaiian reef, highlighting why even the pros get a little nervous before paddling out. With 12 to 15 foot waves rolling in, it was bound to be a win some lose some kind of day for a few of the guys and it certainly shaped up that way. With a pay to play theme, some ended up paying more than others. Here are some of the highlights of the day in a few words and a few pictures.
Evan Valiere put together the highest total of the day with a 18.16.
Jamie O’Brien did his thing against Dane Reynolds, paddling in with a 14.77 to 3.24 win, which he wrapped up with a little double barrel, no big deal.
The perfect 10 on the day was handed down by 19 year old John John Florence in round two. Kelly Slater called it the most technical wave of the day.
Florence currently leads the Vans Triple Crown and could be the youngest ever to take the title… however it’s not over yet.
Laurie Towner had his shoulder dislocated while Tanner Guduaskas took a few pretty good beatings as well.
The swell for today is looking as treacherous and heart pounding as yesterday, which should provide a battle or two, though I am not sure what they battle more, the reef or each other, either way it should make for a good day two.
