Glossary of Terms

Abstract
A piece that uses shapes, colors and forms to achieve a desired effect, and that does not try and represent a depiction of reality.

Aesthetic
Concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty. 

Analogue Photography
Photography that uses an analogue camera and film, that is not digital.

Archival Fine Art Print
A name that describes fine art prints created on inkjet printers, used by many artists, galleries, and print shops to note high quality printing, which is also known as Giclée.

Artist’s Proof
Is a first impression of an art print, often it’s produced by the artist to confirm the state of the print before creating further editions.

Collective
A group of artists that work together to achieve an objective.

Composition
Outlines the arrangement of individual elements within a work.

Contemporary Art
A phrase used to describe art of the present day, or the relatively recent past that’s usually of an avant-garde nature.

Contrast
The difference between the light and dark areas in a work.

Curator
Someone who is an art expert and manages collections and organizes exhibitions.

Edition
Notes a series of identical prints, or impressions, made from the same image.

Float
Is the way artwork is mounted that gives a full view of the work, including the sides. 

Giclée
A name that describes fine art prints created on inkjet printers, used by many artists, galleries, and printing shops to note high quality printing, which is also known as Archival Fine Art Print.

Landscape
An image of a naturally occurring scenery.

Large Format Film
Film cameras that capture images larger than 4x5 inches. Common sizes are 5x7, 8x10 or 11x14. 

Matted
Work that is framed with a white mat board surrounding the edge of the artwork, giving space between the work and the frame.

Medium
Refers to both to the type of art (photography, painting, printmaking), in addition to the materials a work is made from.

Medium Format Film
Cameras that capture images larger than 24x36 mm, but smaller than 4x5 inches.

Mixed Media
Artwork that is created from a combination of different media or materials.

Multidisciplinary
When an artist combines several artistic techniques in creating a work of art.

Photography
The art of creating an image. 

Print
Refers to a piece of art where there are multiple copies of an original work.

Surf Collective Artist Edition
A limited edition of pieces from an artist, produced and sold exclusive by Surf Collective.

35MM
A film camera which uses the 35mm format film.
